HOW WE SUPPORT FERTILITY
How can acupuncture help?
Menstrual Cycle Optimisation
Menstrual cycle irregularities are very common and can add extra stress when trying to conceive. Having a stress-free period, a clear fertile window and regular ovulation pattern can make for a much easier fertility journey.
IVF & ART Support
Acupuncture can be incorporated throughout your IVF, ICSI, OI or IUI cycle. Regular sessions in the months leading up to treatment provide ongoing support, while appointments can be timed around key stages of your cycle and treatment protocol. Acupuncture may also help support relaxation and manage treatment-related symptoms. Our practitioners are experienced in working alongside fertility clinics and different ART protocols.
Egg and Sperm Health
Where poor egg and/or sperm quality are contributors to sub-fertility, regular acupuncture sessions can influence the environment where these cells mature. It takes roughly 3 months for both eggs and sperm to mature and both need to be in good health.
PCOS & Cycle Regulation
By now most people know that PCOS is now PMOS. Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome affects around 1 in 8 Australians with a uterus so we see it a lot in clinic. Identifying when and if you're ovulating can be challenging and hormone regulation, egg quality, and insulin sensitivity are all potentially affected. Acupuncture and herbal medicine may support some of these underlying factors alongside GP or specialist care.
Recurrent Miscarriage
For patients with a history of miscarriage, we focus on building uterine health and immune regulation between attempts, while carefully and sensitively supporting your nervous system. Acupuncture is safe and supportive in pregnancy, with weekly treatment recommended during the first trimester or for as long as feels right for you.
Male Fertility & Sperm Health
Male fertility contributes to around 50% of fertility challenges, yet there is a large gap in fertility care when it comes to investigating and treating men. We can refer for semen analysis and determine a plan based on these results which may include acupuncture (not near the genitalia), Chinese herbs, supplements or referral when necessary.
An initial and follow up acupuncture appointment is usually an hour, 60 minutes. Your practitioner will go through your story and history to date, plus any test results or IVF plan you currently have or have had in the past. Chinese medicine is a whole system approach so we also ask questions about lifestyle, sleep your menstrual cycle and stress.
We often take pulse, have a look at your tongue to help up decide on a pattern to guide out treatment. We then pop the acupuncture needles in gently and leave you to rest for 20 minutes.
From there we'll create a treatment plan that suits your circumstances. Our fertility acupuncture clinic is in East Melbourne, five minutes from the CBD and walking distance from the major fertility clinics on Victoria Parade.

Yes, though it's not all about fertility and babies. Melbourne Reproductive Acupuncture was founded specifically to provide specialist Chinese medicine care for reproductive and hormonal health. We work with anyone looking to improve their hormonal health, whether or not conception is the goal, because we understand that reproductive health matters across all stages of life. All three of our founding acupuncturists, Kim, Jo and Meg, have dedicated their practice to this area, and our entire clinic is structured around fertility, IVF support, pregnancy and related conditions

Recent research on acupuncture and IVF has been encouraging. A 2024 meta-analysis of nearly 5,000 participants found clinical pregnancy rates significantly higher in acupuncture groups, and the largest systematic review to date confirmed improvements in both clinical pregnancy and live birth rates, as well as reductions in anxiety and pain. Research suggests that beginning acupuncture around 12 weeks before a transfer offers the greatest benefit, supporting follicular development and uterine health in the lead-up to a cycle. That said, starting later still has value and we will always tailor treatment to where you are in the process.
Not all studies show the same level of benefit and individual response varies. What we can say is that acupuncture is a safe and well-tolerated complement to IVF that may meaningfully support both your chances and your experience of the process.

Yes, unexplained infertility is one of the situations where acupuncture is often most appropriate, because there's no single medical issue to target. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, there is almost always a discernible pattern, and treatment is directed at that. Many patients with an "unexplained" diagnosis find that Chinese Medicine offers a more complete framework for understanding what might be contributing to their difficulty conceiving.
