PREGNANCY ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture to Support
Birth & Labour Preparation
If you're approaching your due date or past 40 weeks, acupuncture can help support your body's readiness for labour. We offer dedicated birth preparation and labour preparation appointments from 36 weeks, and we often have short-notice availability for post-dates patients.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS
Can acupuncture induce labour?
Acupuncture doesn't forcibly induce labour. What it can do is support your body's physiological readiness for labour to begin naturally.
From around 36 weeks, we generally recommend weekly acupuncture as you prepare for labour, both physically and emotionally. These appointments centre on settling the nervous system, supporting your energy through the final weeks, and encouraging the body's own preparations for birth including the gradual softening of the cervix.
As your due date approaches (or passes), treatment shifts towards birth preparation acupuncture. This traditionally uses points on the lower legs associated with cervical ripening, alongside points chosen for whatever else is going on for you. Frequency builds as you get closer: typically weekly from 37 weeks, increasing to every second day by 41 weeks.
TIMING GUIDE
When to start labour preparation acupuncture
Weekly from 36 Weeks
We recommend weekly acupuncture from 36 weeks, allowing 3 to 4 sessions before your due date. This is our recommended approach to support birth preparation.
However, if you are starting at 38-40 weeks, it is still considered worthwhile. Treatment intensity may increase slightly to account for the shorter timeline. Many patients start here and respond well to the acupuncture.
40+ Weeks
We regularly see post-dates patients, often referred by midwives and obstetricians as an option to explore before or alongside scheduled induction. You can book online or Call us directly for post-dates appointments.
Pre Planned Induction
If you have a planned induction date, we still recommend weekly acupuncture from 36 weeks to support birth preparation. Acupuncture in the days leading up to a planned induction can help prepare the cervix and reduce anxiety ahead of the procedure.
Even one session in the days before a planned induction can be valuable. Don't assume it's too late. We recommend calling us to speak with one of our qualified practitioners to best advise you.
Birth preparation acupuncture sessions are focused specifically on the final weeks of pregnancy. We combine cervical ripening points with nervous system support and any additional treatment for late-pregnancy discomforts you're experiencing.
Most patients find their sessions in the final weeks to be genuinely enjoyable. A quiet hour to rest, breathe and feel looked after before a big event.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions about
labour induction acupuncture
-
A Cochrane review of acupuncture in late pregnancy found some benefit for cervical ripening (the softening and preparation of the cervix ahead of labour), which is the main focus of our birth preparation treatments. Evidence that acupuncture can bring on labour itself is more limited, and researchers agree that larger, well-designed trials are still needed.
Acupuncture in late pregnancy is considered safe when provided by a registered practitioner, with no known adverse effects for your baby. Many of our patients also find these sessions a valuable chance to rest, settle the nervous system and feel supported in the final stretch.

Yes, acupuncture in the days before a planned induction may help prepare the cervix, and many patients find it eases anxiety and settles the nervous system heading into the procedure. Once you know your induction date, we'll work our appointments around it. Acupuncture is not known to interfere with medical induction methods, and we're always happy to liaise with your care team.

Birth preparation acupuncture uses specific acupuncture points relevant to labour, cervical ripening points, foetal positioning, and points that support the onset of physiological labour. It's more targeted than general pregnancy acupuncture, and the treatment focus shifts significantly from earlier in pregnancy.
